Cowane’s Hospital is Scotland’s finest Guildhall owned by the oldest charity in the country. Originally designed by Robert Mylne, the King’s Mastermason, it has undergone radical alterations on many occasions.
Following a thorough measured survey, BTA produced an in-depth Conservation Plan for both the building and its grounds. Understanding their significance informed the proposals for sympathetic alterations which helped breath new life into the building and made it comfortable and future proof.
Discreet new services have been added to the A-listed fabric and provide flexibility for a wide variety of uses. The Main Hall has been redecorated and the Guildry pictures rehung, all lit by sculptural, geometric fittings, reflecting the shape of the open roof structure. A mobile interpretive display tells the story of the building and its previous uses. The Hall is served by a new catering kitchen and distinctive accessible toilets. Some of the superb original construction of the Wings have been revealed as part of the works, and the spaces have been appropriatly insulated to further improve the buildings energy efficiency.
